Thanks for everything.

Tonnes of walleye up there. We jigged, trolled, and casted for them and had non stop atcion with lots of double headers, and like you said a few pike following them to the boat. There were alot of small pickerel (walleye ), but we did catch at least 20 or so each that were above 2lbs.

We spent probably half the time on Upper Kat Lake fishing for pike, and found a couple of good spots where we hooked into tome really nice ones. There was one my Dad missed that we figured was in the 15 pound range, lots in the 4 to 6 pound, and of course the monster. It measured 45 inches. Our scale was broke so we didn't get a weight. If you use the "pike formula" (length x length x length / 3500) it equates to 26 lbs. I don't know if that's how much it weighed, and frankly I don't give a shit. In order to make all our flights today we had to ask our friend Ron Baron to help us fly-out some of our guests.

We help each other out here in the James Bay frontier, it's like an unwritten rule amongst the pilots of the area.

Here's a picture of the Beaver float plane that took our fly-in fishing customers to their secluded honey holes today. Here are some notes that Billy jotted down for his blog about their caribou hunt in Northern Quebec.

We went to quebec to hunt on dec.2 to 5 2006. We saw many animals however we missed the migration. We hunted caribou that strayed from the herd with outfitter Donnat Asselin ( excellent outfitter ). The accommodations ( trailers ) were good and warm and the camp maintance guys do a fantastic job cleaning the bath rooms. The camp was pretty cool all around. The roads were extremely icy but we managed to get a few of the left behind the herd caribou. We had caribou for supper on the last night and it made the cold and ice conditions well worth it. The meat was great.

The happy Ontario fly-in fishing and caribou hunting team took some time in northern Quebec Canada this early winter. Billy has obviously done this before.

We've started booking for 2007, give us a call in Cochrane Ontario Canada.

Fishing Bounce Lake Ontario Canada

The James Bay frontier of Northern Ontario Canada is a fun place to take a fishing trip.

Some of our guests are so happy to be out walleye fishing at Bounce Lake that they fail to board the boat correctly. Bounce Lake is one of our prized walleye fishing lakes and the cabin there was deteriorating because it sinking in the soft ground. That cabin is already over 25 years old. Billy remembers putting in the old beams himself as a child with his Dad, Steve. Just in passing, we are not afraid to tell you that we truly believe that we are one of Canada's best choice of fly-in fishing outfitters. We back that up with three and half decades of summer vacation memories. That's why we enjoy giving you a behind the scenes look at our long established operations. In our opinions, this is the real Canadian fishing trip, most everything else we see in advertisements is based on what we have been doing day-to-day since 1971, but we don't think could ever replace the real thing.

We forecast knowing that we will be here in the future. We have good pike and walleye fishing. We protect our lakes from being exploited. We are in no hurry to do any harm to our tremendous pike and walleye fishing resources. We manage our lakes critically and highly promote sportsfishing conservation measures including catch and release and the use of single barbless hook on our monster pike lakes. We know that with only the best fishing around, well-kept fully-equipped cabins, immaculate flight and float plane maintenance record, sturdy boats, operating motors, personal attention and hospitality, competitive prices, fishing and outdoor guidance and all the other equipment in good shape, we will survive as veterans in Canada's tourism industry.

Ok, now back to the story. We had to fly-in outpost cabin. ifred thought that this would be a great blog article to show our future guests that we work hard here at Polar Bear Outfitters to keep our camps in tip top shape. It took us two trips with the Cessna to get all the material in. Johnny ( not to be mistaken with the now world famous aka Johnny Bait ) and Brian spent a week out there with the portable sawmill to repair the cabin. These guys worked hard in the 40 degree C humidity and they earned their place in our blog. We originally thought that this reconstruction project would take a couple of days but it took a week. Billy is still trying to figure out what these carpenters did with all those hours at Bounce Lake. So here is:

Fly-In Fishing Camp Repairs at Bounce Lake

Brian is ... well ... I don't know what he's doing there. I guess he's pretending to swing off a chair to indicate that the support structure is sound. That's my best guess.

There are pictures here of the cabin in different phases of facelifting. Actually, this is more than cosmetic work. One of the things that some guests complained about last year was the heat inside the cabin during those blistering humid afternoons in the James Bay Frontier. The area has a long history of being unforgiving to those that come unprepared. It is essential on these days to get indoors and drink as much water as you can. It could be up to 10 degrees Celsius cooler in the cabin than outside. Open at least two windows, perferably ones not facing the sun.

We have some of our cabins that have siding on them already and those ones do stay cooler in the afternnon than their non-reflective white, non-vinyl-sheathed counterparts.

Our portable sawmill has been modified to be used to make planks and wood beams. we like a good challenge here at Polar Bear Outfitters and ifred came up with a contest.

We bet two free pickerel cleanings and a dozen worms on who could strip the glued-on like bark off of a 40 foot long 8 inch diameter spruce tree and drag it up the hill to the cabin. ifred himself is the king stripped dragger securing the top time of 1 hour and 13 minutes. Another proud achievement for all of us here at the Lillabelle Lake Air Base in Northern Ontario Canada.

Three logs on top of the bare and squared cribbings now support the outpost building. Brian thinks the cabin should be good for about 30 years.

Bryan and Katie Fly-In Outpost Engagement

In true James Bay Frontier spirit, our local worm picking wizard, dock superviser and outboard motor repairman Bryan proposed marriage to his long time sweetheart Katie at a fly-in outpost camp last week. It doesn't get much more romantic that that around here folks. Imagine the moment. Walleye fillets a-frying in a secluded setting, a young couple in love rained in for the afternoon in a fly-in fishing outpost camp, the makings for a real romantic James Bay Frontier time.

At the air base, we found out about the happy event when Billy returned from their mid-week flight check. It seems to provide everything that a person needs for a fun summer fishing trip vacation. Take the lake that we fly you into for example. It is the source of endless resources. Here at Polar Bear Outfitters, we understand that our guest come with various levels of wilderness experience.

Some come to the James Bay Frontier with no bush experience at all. Brian, our dock supervisor outboard motor repair local worm picking champion, thought it might be a good idea to make a few suggestions, in a light hearted way, in hopes of providing our greener guests a few helpful ideas about how to use the lake resources. So here are :

... other than the incredibly good fishing of course ...Ten Good Uses of Your Fly-in Lake Water Resources
1. If you get too hot then go swimming.

2. When you are being swarmed by mosquitoes and black flies take a boat and go on the lake. For some strange reasons these pests won't follow you, I guess the moose have always known that eh.

3. On a 7 day fly-in fishing trip, personal hygiene is entirely optional. The James Bay Frontier culture accepts excess hair growth and unusually sharp body odours with no questions asked. However, some of our guests may sense being dirty and find that uncomfortable.

Note : If you think you are getting too dirty or are uncomfortable about your own emitting fragrances you can always wash in the lake.

There arise occasions when one or more members of a fishing party ask another practicing fisher to bathe themselves. This happens frequently in Northern Ontario secluded outpost camps. The customary remedy is for the pungent angler to immediately set about to wash in the water.

4. If you are very thirsty and have no other water then please feel free to kneel down on the shore and scoop yourself up a lively glass of that refreshing transparent liquid.

5. If you get bored, the lake serves as another option to consider as a place of amusement. Here you can use your imagination and invent yourselves a great time.

Note : There are side-effects to having fun. Fun can often lead to feeling happy, alive and free.

6. You can bring a camera and take nice pictures at sunsets.

7. Pouring buckets of water on the camp fire will put out the camp fire. Water can be carried to the fire pit using buckets found at the camp. Similar methods of transporting volumes of H2O have been used in the James Bay Frontier for thousands of years.

8. Instead of piling up the dishes like it might sometimes happen at home, dishes can be regularly washed in the sink. Water can easily be heated up to be used in a variety of other domestic applications as well. See #7 for details on how to acquire water.

9. Nature lovers can take advantage of canoeing along the shores and see a huge variety of wild animals that not surprisingly make good uses of the lake. Moose, wolves, black bears, bald eagles, beavers, skunks, bobcats, porcupines, muskrats, lynxes, otters, wolverines, foxes, minks, squirrels, groundhogs, rabbits, chipmunks are available to be seen at our fly-in fishing outpost camps near the water.

10. Minnows need to be in fresh water in order to survive. Increase your minnow’s life expectancy, replace its water regularly and put your minnow bucket in the lake after using it.

aka Johnny Bait's Minnows and Worms
i-Fred

Flyin Outpost Boot Camp Rules

We hope you enjoy your stay with us here in the frontier. We also hope that the camp was left clean and that all the equipment is working well. We do trust our previous guests here to leave the camp in great shape for the next group of anglers; like we trust you will as well.

Brian our trusted dock hand, outboard motor repairman and local worm harvesting champion, reminded me again that I should mention something about flyin outpost camp safety and rules on my blog. I thought that was a good idea and asked i-Fred to put together some Billy Flyin Outpost Boot Camp Rules.

Our Internet Marketing Expert Fred has gone completely nuts lately. He can't do anything like normal people anymore. He's on the computer fighting with some spammer or fishing all day, and all night. Absolutely nothing else. We have to remind him that it is dark outside and the sleepy-eyed pike don't see well at night. Anyway he put it together so here it is for you ladies and gentlemen from Cochrane Ontario Canada ...

Flyin Outpost Boot Camp Rules

1. Respect the rules in force. Make sure you observe the quota policy and fish with a permit. The fish is a collective asset that needs to be safeguarded. Waste and excess are unacceptable.

2. Boat carefully and with safe limits. Windy conditions in northern Ontario can be hazardous. Always have and wear your life jacket. Do not drink and operate a boat. Park your boat away from rocks and in designated places.

3. Do not try to fly-out limits of fish. Keep fish out of water as short a time as possible. Air kills fish. Do not kill any northern pike.

4. You are allowed to eat only 2 walleye a day per person as a shore lunch. This is to maintain our quality of fishing.( no bigger than 18inches).

5. Do not throw garbage in the bush. Do not throw fish remains in lake in front of the dock. Fish remains are to be thrown out in middle of lake.

6. Respect catch and release and limits of fish. Violators may be subject to fines ranging from $ 250 to $ 2000, arrest of property and in some cases imprisonment.

7. Make sure all boats, fridge, and camp are cleaned for the next guests. This will ensure you didn’t forget anything and avoid monetary penalties.

8. Garbage. All your garbage is to be double bagged and taken out. Leave tracks not trash. This will help ensure that our next guests won’t have a visit by Mr.Bear.

9. Be respectful of all territory, and infrastructures. In the bush of northern Ontario as elsewhere, theft and vandalism are considered crimes.

10. Things missing. Please tell pilot if there is anything missing or not working properly.

11. Camp Fires. Always check with pilot for camp fire restrictions. Do not use wood cut for camp wood stove for camp fires. Brush and fall downs may be gathered about the area. Keep fire small.
Everything that you should need for an enjoyable, secluded stay is here and should be working well. If something is missing or broken, please let us know so that we can fix it or replace it before the next party comes in. The pilot may not have much time to spend with you before taking off again so please make him aware of any problems with the camp or equipment while he is with you at the camp. He may be able to fix or replace equipment on the spot and all will be well for the next party.

Again, please leave our camps and equipment in good shape for the next party or risk losing your deposit. Thanks for your attention and hope you have a nice fly-in fishing trip.

Billy and his crew at the Lillabelle Lake Air Base

Great Fishing No Complaints

The fishing has been amazing. None of the customers are complaining and many of them are rebooking for next year. We are having a great summer. The weather is more predictable and the pike have started to fall into their summer slumber period. The northerns will attack bait but they are not biting hard really. The biggest fish still must keep their bellies full of minnows. The dark, muddy watered, weeded trenches are the trophy thrones during a blistering days.

No problems with walleyes, they are fat and juicy and they are plentiful in our well-managed fly-in only lakes.

My dock, maintenance and office guys have been working hard repairing the camps and keeping fuel and supplies in order. Fred's got tons of SEO Services to work on while here fishing again. The carrying weights have been kept to limit and people wanting to bring in the additionals are happily paying the $1 per pound overload fee.

The plane has been performing wonderfully. Got out of the last regular maintenance inspections with flying colours. Do not foresee any trouble.

I apologize that we haven't been around the telephone very often and it is extremely hard to get to us. Email is the best way to communicate with us. If you miss us on telephone, which happens frequently when we are busy, please leave a detailed message and a return telephone number. Billy will get back to you. You can always try the 7:30 AM trick I mentioned in an earlier post.

I have been helping out some of the other fly-in outfitters when it happens that I have no flights and they are overloaded simultaneously. These few extra flights are keeping me more busy than usual. I can't be reached on the phone very often but I can be reached by email everyday.

So happy fishing in Canada. Canadian Fishing Trips and Trophy Fish brought to you by ...

i-Fred Lake is MySecret Lake and MySecret Lake Worms and Minnows Bait Shop is really Johnny Bait's Minnow and Worms.

Our Fly-In Fishing Season has Started

We are off to a great start.
